CARBONDALE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS
The Greater Carbondale Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that Marissa Kielar, of Carbondale Area, and Emily Hameza, of Lakeland, have been named the recipients of the inaugural Greater Carbondale Chamber of Commerce Youth Board Scholarship. Kielar, the daughter of Gary and Carol Keilar, 66 Battle Avenue, Carbondale, will attend the Smeal College of Business at the Pennsylvania State University, University Park campus to major in Business.
Hameza, the daughter of Nick and LuAnn Hameza, 176 Decker Road, Jermyn, will attend Mansfield University to major in Accounting. The Youth Board scholarship is open to all graduating seniors who plan on pursuing a business degree and who reside in the communities served by the Greater Carbondale Chamber of Commerce, an area that spans across Upper Lackawanna, Susquehanna, and Wayne Counties. The Scholarship is completely funded through the fundraising activities of the Chamber Youth Board, which was founded in 2004 by then senior, John Brennan, as his Governor’s School Project. Even though Brennan has since graduated, the group continues to meet and plan activities throughout the year. “The awarding of these scholarships fulfills one of the main goals that I had when I started this Youth Board,” said Brennan, who now serves as one of the group’s advisors, along with Steven Tourje, of NEP Telephone Co. and Lori Pfahl, of the Chamber. “We here at the Chamber hope that some of these students who major in business decide to return to this area after college and contribute to the economic revitalization of our region.” Brennan also went on to add, “None of this would be possible if it was not for the current members of the Youth Board. They’re a great group of students who work hard throughout the year, planning and running the fundraisers that support this scholarship and other worthwhile community causes.” For more information about the Scholarship or the Youth Board, contact the Greater Carbondale Chamber of Commerce at 282-1690.
